At least 52 dead in storms across the Mid-South

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes ripped through the Mid-South last night killing at least 52 people, and injuring hundreds more. The storms stretched from Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and on up into the Cincinnati area in Ohio. In Arlington, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis, a Sears store at Hickory Ridge Mall collapsed after a tornado ripped through. Three were killed when the roof ripped off of a logistics warehouse in an industrial complex in Mempis. There was more heavy damage in suburban Southaven, Mississippi, and at least 3 people were killed.
In Jackson, Tennessee, about 50 miles northeast of Memphis in Madison County, the women’s dormitory at Union University was destroyed, and several students injured. It had been reported by Memphis media and the AP that students were killed, but a spokesperson for the University assured that no one at the university was killed. On U.S. 45 Bypass, across from the University, an Exxon gas station was leveled, and a nearby Walgreen’s drug store was heavily damaged.
As the storms moved northeast, they continued to ravage homes and communities. In Middle Tennessee, 2 more people were confirmed dead in Williamson County in the Fairview community, and dozens more injured as lines of storms moved through town not once, but three times. East on Nashville in Hartsville, Trousdale County, a natural gas pipeline junction point and re-pressurizing plant was hit directly by the tornado which caused several explosions and a fire. Residents as far as 40 miles away reported seeing a giant fireball in the sky. In southern Kentucky, several more people were killed as tornadoes ripped through their homes.
At just after 4am, the intensity of the storms seemed to diminish and move out of the area. The storms are now over North Carolina, where it is feared they could re-intensify and cause even more death and destruction.

UPDATE: CNN is reporting the death toll is up to 54, and may still climb as more victims are found among the rubble.
The Ten Commandments of The Mafia

Italian police have found the “Ten Commandments” of the Costa Nostra, the Sicilian Mafia, at the hideout of a captured Mob boss. It’s an interesting look at how structured the mafia really is.
- No one can present himself directly to another of our friends. There must be a third person to do it.
- Never look at the wives of friends.
- Never be seen with cops.
- Don’t go to pubs and clubs.
- Always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty - even if your wife’s about to give birth.
- Appointments must absolutely be respected.
- Wives must be treated with respect.
- When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth.
- Money cannot be appropriated if it belongs to others or to other families.
- People who can’t be part of Cosa Nostra: anyone who has a close relative in the police, anyone with a two-timing relative in the family, anyone who behaves badly and doesn’t hold to moral values.
Safari 3.0 Beta for Windows

I must confess, I’ve been waiting for Apple to port Safari over to Windows for a long time. As soon as it was announced as I was watching the news feeds from Apple’s WWDC last week, I immediately downloaded and installed it. It was followed a day and a half later with a security update.
It’s a nimble little browser, nice and light, and I especially like the FreeType font rendering engine Apple chose to go with. Though, it doesn’t seem many Windows users appreciate it, given all the moaning they all seem to do about it. Another moan and groan I heard about Safari for Windows was the lack of ability to add extensions and skins. To me, this isn’t very important. Safari for Windows, in my opinion, isn’t meant to be someone’s primary browser. Instead, I think it’s tailor-made for people like me who want to test their sites on Safari to ensure their Mac users aren’t alienated, but don’t have access to a Macintosh. Also, I think it was released especially for developers given the coming of the iPhone.
There are some who bemoan the entry of the Safari web browser into the perceived fight of Internet Explorer 7 vs. Firefox 2.0, but I’m of the mind of more competition could only make things better. Firefox, while a great browser and one that I use daily, is starting to show signs of bloat. Though, I hear good things about the development of Firefox 3.0, and how they’re working to eliminate some of the bloat.
So would I use Safari as my everyday web browser? No. But it is handy to have around to test things out in. And it also makes some nice screenshots, too. Safari has won a spot on my hard drive.

As soon as I saw the announcement on my admin dashboard, I knew I had to get it. I upgraded my WordPress installation to the new version 2.0. With a minimum of fuss, I was able to have the site back up in running in mere minutes. I’ve also added a few gadgets, including the weather plugin you see to the right, and a mail form. I must say, I’m quite happy with the new version, as it seems to have fixed some oddities behind the scenes, and introduced some new admin toys. If you are running a Wordpress blog, I highly suggest the upgrade. It’s worth it.

(Hover over the picture for a description)This is not too far from my house here in Chicago. I’m at 4030W/4900S, this was at 5600W/5500S. Thursday’s rush hour was already off to a rocky start with a snowstorm dumping more than an inch per hour, but this compounded things. Hey, you can never say nothing ever happens in Chicago.
