It’s official: Illinois has hit 10.1% unemployment, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security and a report by NBC5. At 10.1%, the state’s unemployment rate is higher than the national average, which is currently at 9.4%. So what does that mean in real-people-numbers? There are currently 671,400 people unemployed and receiving unemployment benefits in the state of Illinois.
Keep in mind, this doesn’t count the number of people who are unemployed and didn’t qualify for unemployment benefits, or those who have been unemployed for an extended period and have run out of benefits. I’m not sure where I would even find those numbers, or if they’re even measured anywhere. But my best guestimate is probably another 4%, which would bring the total up to 14%.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the hardest hit sector was manufacturing, which lost 9,500 workers, with transportation and utilities trailing right behind at 5,300 jobs lost.
So it seems we’ve not hit the bottom yet. Hang on, folks, this ride could get very bumpy.
