As you can see, the site has a new design. I cannibalized a widget-ready WordPress theme and created my own out of it. I also took the opportunity to upgrade the software that runs this site to the newest version, since it was running for the longest time on an old version. I’m hopefully going to be doing a lot more with the site now that it’s cleaned up and received some much needed upgrades. In the works are some how-to’s, some more design-related links, design-related rantings, and of course, rantings from the middle of nowhere. So, come back and see me soon.

Safari 3.0 Beta for Windows

Safari for WindowsI must confess, I’ve been waiting for Apple to port Safari over to Windows for a long time. As soon as it was announced as I was watching the news feeds from Apple’s WWDC last week, I immediately downloaded and installed it. It was followed a day and a half later with a security update.

It’s a nimble little browser, nice and light, and I especially like the FreeType font rendering engine Apple chose to go with. Though, it doesn’t seem many Windows users appreciate it, given all the moaning they all seem to do about it. Another moan and groan I heard about Safari for Windows was the lack of ability to add extensions and skins. To me, this isn’t very important. Safari for Windows, in my opinion, isn’t meant to be someone’s primary browser. Instead, I think it’s tailor-made for people like me who want to test their sites on Safari to ensure their Mac users aren’t alienated, but don’t have access to a Macintosh. Also, I think it was released especially for developers given the coming of the iPhone.

There are some who bemoan the entry of the Safari web browser into the perceived fight of Internet Explorer 7 vs. Firefox 2.0, but I’m of the mind of more competition could only make things better. Firefox, while a great browser and one that I use daily, is starting to show signs of bloat. Though, I hear good things about the development of Firefox 3.0, and how they’re working to eliminate some of the bloat.

So would I use Safari as my everyday web browser? No. But it is handy to have around to test things out in. And it also makes some nice screenshots, too. Safari has won a spot on my hard drive.

I’m sick of Paris Hilton

It’s early June as I write this, and the story of the week on all the news outlets is Paris Hilton. First, she goes to jail to serve 23 days of her 45 day sentence for driving without a license, this after a DUI and driving on a suspended license. Two days later she is released by the sheriff for house arrest because of some unspecified “medical condition.” The judge, upon hearing this, is understandably furious, and hauls her back into court and decrees that she will now serve all 45 days of her sentence.

Does this sound more like a contrived reality TV show than the evening news? Yeah. It does. Yet, it has eclipsed the arguably more important stories of the day to lead the news on Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, and here in Chicago, NBC 5, ABC 7 and Fox 32. Cooler heads prevailed at CBS 2 and WGN, only mentioning the Paris Hilton fiasco in the “top stories” part of the newscast, thankfully not leading with it. I will give credit where credit is due, though. Most of my local stations here in Chicago are pretty good at covering local news and issues, despite the fact that almost all of the local television media are network owned and operated stations (CBS 2, NBC 5, ABC 7, Fox 32, Telemundo 44, and Univision 66 are all owned by their respective networks – WGN is the exception, owned by The Tribune Company, publisher of the Chicago Tribune).
