Caution: Web work ahead

Here’s a snapshot of the site I’m working on for my employer.
This is potentially the first of 3 designs for them to pick from. I had one previous to this, but I no longer like it, so it’s out of the running.
There is a problem, though. I guess it’s because I’m still learning the tricks of CSS. It doesn’t render exactly the way I want it to in Internet Explorer. It renders like this:
Here’s the relevant CSS:
#pageHeader {
position:absolute;
left:5%;
top:0px;
width:90%;
height:100px;
z-index:1;
background-color: #FF0000;
background-image: url(../images/keating-bg.png);
background-repeat: repeat-x;
overflow: hidden;
margin: 0px;
border: 0px;
}
#navbar {
position:absolute;
left:5%;
top:100px;
width:90%;
height:25px;
z-index:2;
background-color: #425968;
margin: 0px;
border: 0px;
}
#main {
position:absolute;
left:5%;
top:125px;
width:90%;
height: 100%;
z-index:3;
background-color: #FFFFFF;
margin: 0px;
border: 0px;
}
#news {
position:relative;
float:right;
background-color: #E0E7EB;
z-index:4;
margin: 10px;
padding:4px;
width: 150px;
height: 120px;
left:10px;
top:10px;
right: 10px;
}
#newsHeader {
background-color:#FF0000;
position:relative;
float:left;
z-index:5;
width:100%;
top:0px;
left:0px;
}
Anyone want to take a stab and tell me what I’m doing wrong?
Pictures from Iraq

I have a friend serving in the military in Iraq. Mosul, to be exact. He takes photos all the time, and manages to put ‘em up on the web (how, I don’t know. I would have thought the military would forbid shit like that). Anyway, there were a couple of disturbing photos.
And I see these photos on the heels of the revelations that our military, under orders from our government, is using White Phosphor as an incendiary weapon on civilians in Fallujah. White Phosphor is basically napalm reformulated (using jet fuel instead of gasoline), but 1000 times more ’sticky’ and deadly. When white phosphor is dropped on people, it burns people right down to the bone, literally melting them away, strangely leaving clothing intact.
Which makes me wonder what happened to the child this doll head belongs to.
Is this really my United States??

My desktop is clear! For now. It won’t last, given my habit of treating the desktop as an urgent to-do list of files and folders. Can’t say the same on the Windows 2000 box (seen in the VNC window). Enjoy!
VelocityMedia

VelocityMedia is my own freelance business site. It’s been under perpetual construction. I need to get on it and get it updated and finished. I think the problem is I am way too critical of my own stuff, so in working on it, I get disgusted about ˝ way through it, and decide I don’t like the design. So I scrap it and start over. Now, for whatever reason, I’m considering using the Mambo content management system instead (this site uses WordPress). So there’s a whole other beast to contend with and re-design.
But I can’t stress (mainly to myself at this point) enough how important it is that I finish and put this site up. With my job going down to part time (25-30 hrs) soon, I am going to need to pickup freelance jobs to make it. That shouldn’t be too hard. I’m in a great city for that!
Keating of Chicago

Here’s an idea I was kicking around. Keating of Chicago is a manufacturer of commercial kitchen equipment (grills, fryers, warmers, etc.) here in the Chicagoland area. I was toying with their logo a bit. While trying to keep with that whole 50’s diner look the old logo has, I brought it up to date with a bit more polished look, still retaining that 50’s kitch charm. Whether they will use it or not, I don’t know. But it’s worth a shot. ![]()
